The law enforcement raid that took place last week in Cary has finally made the local news.... online and TV coverage. (I'll be moving this post forward every day for a week or two so that you'll be able to follow the additional links with little effort).

Here's the link from WRAL (this is the original link but it takes you to LOCAL - you'll need to search on "Cary Gambling" to find the article).

On the first page of George Smart's TPJ Web site, there is a link to the N.C. gambling laws. So what is George doing getting arrested at an illegal operation in Cary? Seems a bit hypocritcal to me to on the one hand point out the state law and on the other purposely violate it.

Why do people keep insisting that people were arrested ...

NOBODY GOT ARRESTED ... at all.

You are totally incorrect. Period.

Easy to sling insults and remain anonymous.

Number of people arrested = 0 (zero)

none ... at all ...

I was there and I'm pretty damn sure I didn't get arrested.

Then you were arrested, cited with a misdemeanor, and released at the scene.

arrest verb

- To seize and hold under the authority of law.

- To capture and hold briefly

arrest noun

- The act of detaining in legal custody

- The state of being so detained

BTW - You don't have to be read your Miranda rights, unless you were interrogated.

I wasn't there, so I don't know. Was anyone (everyone) eventually interrogated?

If you were and you weren't read your rights, your Constitutional rights were violated.

They were so brief with people once they realized that there weren't guns and lots of drug.

Basically all that they did was search everyone individually and then write the citation and if necessary provide an evidence receipt for money confiscated.

I was lucky enough (sarcasm) to be waiting outside for someone to move their vehicle so I could leave when they showed up.

They kept myself and two others outside while they got control inside. While outside one of the ATF officers tried to fish for info. a little but thats about it.

That being said, I really don't feel violated I just feel that the bust was hastily organized and that an unnecessary show of force was used.

There were some pot and heroin there, and last I check heroin was still a class A felony.Just ask the local/world superstar Howard. He knows everything about poker.Lol! Keep the games at home, when you choose to rent a commercial office space and charge a outragious rake.Casinos only rake 4 max. Then I say,you deserve what you get.Now Matt can take all that money and pay fines and lawyers fees.
Whats funnys is he has his false justifcation about the game, and the new archor knew everything! They know its not just a one day tourney that got too big for a house. The people in that building arnt very smart and get got what they deserved for being sloppy.

I would be interested in knowing how Matt or even the proprietor at the local grocery store can prevent patrons from having a joint or heroin or even plastic explosives on their person(s) without an illegal search. You have probably permitted visitors to your house who had something illegal on their person and you would have no way of knowing it, but if your house were raided, your name would be posted in the paper as the owner and I guarantee that even though you didn't personally have it, it would be associated with your name and the raid. One thing for certain, I'll have NO confidence in anything that I read in the newspaper or hear on the television based on the way they have screwed this story up. I know many who were there and there is a very thin line of truth down the middle of the reported story and ALL of the local media have taken considerable liberties in their re-writing of the events that took place at MMC's game. As far as the rake goes, the proprietors of these facilities are taking a risk by holding it and providing a service. No one's selling alcohol or food there, it's free to those in attendance (playing or not). And you don't have to fly or drive to AC or Vegas, when all is considered, I believe that local players are getting a deal (if you exclude the cavity search).

Hey so 5 dollar max rake, higher than a casino itself, dosent make any profit for those running a game? The rake is there for the risk? What risk,I thought everything was legal? Dont try and downplay what happened. That game got popped, and you should feel stupid.Your playing in a rented commerical building taking part in a illegal game ran for PROFIT.Who buys the beer and food?Who pays the rent on the building? The profits pay for it all.Im impressed with all the info news and papers had on that game.

Yeah nice try with the only one night a week that got to big for a house. The cops know what was up.They sent in informants to play. You losers were playing with narcs and didnt know it.Im not hurting anyone is not an excuse for running a illegal profitting poker game. They already knew mulitple games where being run.Why didnt MMC talk to the cameras if it was no big deal? Let us know who much community service he gets for it.
The cops arnt stupid I think they can do the math and figure out how much money the stupid players at these games where losing to the rake playing in a illegal setting.Somebody find out when the heroin is going to be at the next game.

Looks like a few people will be looking for"real" job again.

There is nothing unusual about a $5 max rake. $4 is not the standard nor max rake charged by casinos. There are plenty of casinos that have a $5 max rake. The rake varies from game to game, limit to limit, and casino to casino. I know of a casino in Vegas right now where the max rake in a $10-$20 game is $2. That doesn't make it any more the standard than $4 or $5. The standard is what the market will bear. If you want some of the worst rake structures look at the casinos in CA including the largest poker room in the world at Commerce. It's easy to post all kinds of inaccurate garbage when you do it anonymously.

Where not talking about every game in the world. Its easy to dance around the point and not stick to it.A single table rake of 5 dollars in a 1/2 game is high, not to mention a tip for dealer.Without a steady flow of new money into that game, the rake will always win at the end of the night.
I believe if your stupid enough to play in a game obviously run for profit, then you are dumb enough to be raided by the cops and cited for it.Ive heard of the outstanding debts of some of those players, and its hard to believe you can loan out thousands of dollars out of a non-profit game.Someone tell me when that guy with heroin is playing again???
