Officers Bust Gambling Operation
State agents and sheriff's deputies busted a large gambling operation Saturday night, when they raided a clandestine casino in Johnston County.
The raid occurred at about 6 p.m., according to Alcohol Law Enforcement Assistant District Supervisor Glenn Branch. He said officers arrested more than 50 people in an illegal poker operation in a building on Bear Road, off N.C. 242 South, near Benson.
"I can't give very specific information at this time," Mr. Branch said. "The investigation is still ongoing."
Officers reportedly seized illegal gaming tables and cash in the raid.
Clay Joiner of the state ALE agency conducted the investigation into the gambling operation, with Johnston County sheriff's deputies assisting at the time of the bust.
The Daily Record received information regarding the illegal operation more than a year ago, around the end of March 2006. An on-staff reporter contacted Sheriff Steve Bizzell with the information at that time.
The information received by The Daily Record was that members of law enforcement, several millionaires and other influential people were involved in the illegal operation. That information was never confirmed and the names of those charged have not been released.
The makeshift casino was set back from the road and surrounded by fencing. Many cars could be seen there on the weekends, but the operation was not open to the public for business. Anonymous tips said entry to the building was by invitation only.
At the time Sheriff Bizzell said he was unaware of the activity but would look into it.
