It was a somber evening for poker players in Piscataway, Edison, Highland Park, South Plainfield, East Brunswick, Succasunna and Ogdensburg, New Jersey, as 14 of their regulars were arrested in an early morning raid last Thursday.

A police spokesman said five of the men were arrested for running an illegal gambling operation and nine were arrested for participating in the games.

The operation had been gong since March, the officer said, and players were solicited through the internet, e-mails and word of mouth to play at the non-descript office complex in Edison.

A membership fee was charged and players forked over about 10% of the pot in rake, police said, in the month-long investigation and subsequent arrests.

Two 23-year-olds were charged with promoting gambling and maintaining gambling records. One of them also got busted for marijuana possession.

About $3,000 in cash and various gambling paraphenalia - including poker tables, chips and computers - was also seized in the raid.
